Rhinebeck Farmers’ Market

I knew about Rhinebeck Summer Farmers’ Market but it was only recently that I learned that there is also a winter market. Of course I had to visit, after all it is practically in my backyard. Sure glad I did. Though small there were an excellent and wide selection of produce, prepared foods, dairy products, fresh meats, eggs and more. All grown in the Hudson Valley.

The Rhinebeck Winter Farmers’ Market is open alternate Sundays, December – April, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Rhinebeck Town Hall, 80 East Market Street. Future  dates are: 2/19, 3/4. 3/18, 4/1. 4/15 & 4/29.

Potatoes, there were purple potatoes, blue potatoes, red potatoes, yellow potatoes. I bought 3 different kinds of blue and 2 different kinds of red to use as seed potatoes.

We have a winter farmers market too close to us. I’ve never gone though. I ought to some day. I usually stock up in the fall. But it might be nice someday.

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Daphne,
I was really pleasantly surprised and it was crowded. Thought of you when I was taking photo of the eggs perhaps you can get your farm fresh eggs at your local winter farmers market.

  2. Judy Killmer says:

Hi Norma, Oh my goodness – I am amazed how much there is at this Farmers Market. Was it very busy when you were there? Judy K.

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Judy K.,
Yes, it was busy. Glad I got there early enough to get my photos before the displays were further reduced. You should make a trip it is a fun market.
You are not going to believe this, but the president of the farmers’s market attended the progran I presented for CCE last April. Wanted to konw if I would consider doing cooking demo during the summer market and I said “yes”.

  3. Sure wish we had such a beautiful farmer’s market near us, Norma. It all looks so wonderful and delicious.

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Eva,
I was pleasantly surprised at the vatieties and the quality of the produce. You really will enjoy spending a few days in the Hudson Valley, it is only 9 hours drive from Toronto. I like to take the back roads when travelling to Toronto, one section takes you along the foothills of the Adirondack, beautiful country side.

      • We drove to New York City the first year we were married; that was 26 years ago! We’ll have to make that trip again one day. I particularly loved the bridge across the Hudson, that itself looks well worth the trip.

      • Norma Chang says:

        Hello Eva,
The view from the bridge is just spectaculaar no matter what time of the year. If you travel light, you can park at the Poughkeepie train station (there is indoor parking and inexpensive) take Metro North commuter train to NYC and spend a few days. I like doing that.

  4. Wow, Norma. You’re so lucky. What a great selection! And all that fresh meat too.

  5. Juliana says:

So nice browsing at the farmer’s market…enjoyed the pictures.
Hope you have a wonderful week ahead Norma 🙂

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Juliana,
Glad you enjoyed browsing through my local farmers’ market, it is great fun. I looking forward to the summer market when it is outdoors and many more vendodrs.

  6. maryhysong says:

wow what an amazing place. sad to say nothing like it around here as there is no agriculture to speak of. Must be wonderful to have such access to grass fed meat

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Mary,
Oh yes, we have lots of farmland in the Hudson Valley. Even more when I first moved here years ago, I still joke and tell my NYC friends that I live in “cow country”.

  7. Wow, wow, wow…I want to visit this market! We don’t have anything like that here in the Winter…lucky you, Norma!

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Bitsandbreadcrumbs,
You should see our many, many summer farmers’ market. I frequently wondered why in the world I grow vegetables when I have so much readily available locally?????

  8. Looks like a great farmers’ market — such a great variety of produce and prepared foods. I absolutely love shopping at a great local farmers market — I just wished I lived a little closer to a good one. The Doc’s Draft beer looked appealing — I wish I could reach into the photo and grab one right now!

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Profiteroles,
There was a huge keg of beer sitting under the table connected to a very long (many feet) ice covered metal tube. You can bring your own container to purchase ice cold draft beer, it is quite a set up. I was fascinated, took photos but they did not turn out too good. Was offered a taste but because I was driving had to decline.

  9. Wilderness says:

What an array of things and they all look so good. We have a small farmers market here in the summer but have never been. I have been told it is very expensive and more for the tourists.

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Wilderness,
You are living in tourist country of course everything is going to be a bit more expensive. Actually many of the items at the Rhinebeck market were less than at the supermarkets and the quality superior, I was really pleasantly surprised.

  10. Maureen says:

Oh my what a wonderful market – and in the winter. I love Rhinebeck. My sister got her first job as a teacher there (a million years ago it seems) and has never left. She teaches violin now.

We have farmer’s markets here on Saturdays and Sundays and I love buying from the producer. I love the quality and more importantly being able to talk to the producer about any questions I might have.

Your market is a step above any of ours I suspect. 🙂

  11. Michelle says:

There’s a lot of goodies at that market! I go to my local farmer’s market almost every week. Even though I can garden year round the pickings get slim at this time of year and I like to round things out at the market. I can also get local free range meats, seafood, and cheese there.

  12. kitsapfg says:

That is a wonderful selection of items for a winter farmers market. I am always dissappointed in our local farmers market as they only have items I am already growing in my garden – I would love the cheese, meat, and fruit options because those are things I don’t produce in my backyard. But alas, those items are negligible or missing altogether.

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Kitsapfg,
Yes, I was pleasantly surprised. The Hudson Valley is like apple country, we have quite a variety. When it comes to apples I am a snob, only eat local apples. There are many cheese makers in the area also.

  13. Purely.. Kay says:

I love visiting the farmers market and seeing all the wonderful things they have there. And it definitely seems like you had a great time. Wonderful shots 🙂

  14. What a find with the winter market! I would love to have access to a farmers market all year round!

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Yummychunklet,
Yes, it was a delightful find. I think winter markets are becoming more and more popular, so who knows, may be there will be one in your area in the not too distance future.

  15. malar says:

That’s very interesting market! Fully loaded with fresh vegetables and poultry!
    Thanks for visiting my blog!

  16. Just stopping by after visiting Maureen at The Orgasmic Chef to say hi! You have a lovely blog, and this market looks amazing! I love in Southern California where we have lots of produce at the farmers market all year long, but I’m realizing that’s not the case everywhere else in the winter. That fritatta is calling out my name! Happy to have discovered your blog 🙂

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello EA,
Thanks for stopping by to say Hi!. It is winter in NY though a very mild one so far. There is still a long wait for our summer market. You are fortunate to have beautiful weather year round. I am looking forward to your future visits, off to visit your blog now.

  17. Charles says:

Mmm, so much lovely stuff – I love farmers markets… all that wonderful cheese and bread, and look at those veggies… what beautiful colours on the kohlrabi pic and the mushrooms too…!

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Charles,
Yes the breads were beautiful and the cheeses delicious. The mushrooms, especially the yellow ones, were actually more gorgeous than my camera captured. I was driving so had to refuse the beer sample, bummer.

  18. Courtney says:

I really, really wish we had a winter farmer’s market closer to our house. I hate the lack of choices at our grocery store. This place looks amazing!

  19. Fresh is best and you have it all, I am so envious! lovely assortments~

  20. Fascinating to see all the produce at your winter market. I love supporting local producers and farmer’s markets are excellent in allowing you to actually meet the food producer and talk directly to them. We have a farmers market here in South Wales, in the nearby village of Usk which meets twice a month which has some fabulous local cheese, bread and vegetables etc. Next time I visit the States I must visit one of your farmers markets!

And thank you again Norma for coming by my little Welsh blog and leaving a kind comment.

    • Norma Chang says:

      Hello Green Dragonette,
Yes, you must viit our farmers’ markets next time you visit the US this way you can compare the similarities and the differences. Our local cheeses are well known.
Thanks for visiting please stop by again.

  21. Lori says:

Wow, and I thought our little farmer’s market was awesome in the winter! Love the variety that you have available to you. We buy local before we buy anything else, and having something like that at your fingertips only makes it that much easier.
    Enjoyed reading your blog. 🙂
    ~Lori

  22. EcoCatLady says:

I am seething with jealousy over that market! Actually, Denver has a year round indoor market that I’ve never been to because I’m just too lazy to drive across town. But this post is making me re-think that…

I spent several summers working at a camp just outside of Rhineback, and it is such a beautiful area! I’m sitting here pining for the Hudson Valley…

  23. leduesorelle says:

Great to see what’s available and the idea of winter farmers’ markets spreading!
